adhan

Etymology

Borrowed from Arabic أَذَان (ʔaḏān).

noun

  1. (Islam) The call to prayer, which consisted originally of simply four takbirs followed by the statement لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا ٱلله (lā ʔilāha ʔillā llāh) (أَشْهَدُ أَنْ) ((ʔašhadu ʔan)).
If one were to pray alone, then no adhan is needed.
