Borrowed from French hangar (“shed, hangar”), from Middle French hanghart (“enclosure near a house”), from Old French hangart, *hamgart, from Old Frankish *haimgard (“fence around a group of houses”), from *haim (“home, village, hamlet”) + *gard (“yard”).
