From Middle English prohibiten, from Latin prohibeō (“I fend off, prevent, prohibit”) (through past participle prohibitus).

1. (transitive) To forbid, disallow, or proscribe officially; to make illegal or illicit.
   The restaurant prohibits smoking on the patio.
