Etymology

From Middle English quaternioun, from Late Latin quaterniō, from quaternī, ablative form of quater (“four times”) + -iōn. Doublet of kern. The mathematics sense was coined by Irish mathematician and astronomer William Rowan Hamilton in 1843.
