From Hindi चाँपो (cā̃po) / चांपो (cāmpo), imperative form of चाँपना (cā̃pnā) / चांपना (cāmpnā, “to press, knead”), from the Sanskrit verb चपयति (capayati, “to pound, knead”), mid 18th c.
